dear stan & ko than naing oo,

it won't be fair if i left out the name of Yuwaddy Khin Oo in the series
of Burmese Physician_Writers. as a matter of fact she is senior to most
us doctor_writers today being the contemporary of kyi aye and khin swe
oo.

i became familiar with her name (pseudonym) at the 6th or 7th
standard that is around 1950 and 1952 when my elder sister asked me to
read her stories that appeared in the shumawa,thwe-thauk and sone-htauk
magazines. i still remember one love story entitled " TPaah-Moh-Moh-Ni"
in which the main male character has to sort out his love from among
the two beauties, one of whom is a japanese lady.his name is ko thein
lwin and her name is aye mi san.it is a romatic story and the reader is
left with remorse, romance and love for the characters and stories.i
continued reading her stories until i left for mandalay to continue my
tudies.

then, when i reached rangoon in 1959 my aunt told me of a kind and
friendly lady doctor in east rangoon.she said," maung nyo, do you know
the lady doctor in east rangoon.she is lean,fair-complexioned and
beautiful.her name is yi yi hla.her father is doctor u hla maung.they
are very friendly and did not charge us much.we're happy to go to their
clinic." i replied that i did not know.

i met her face to face when sayagyi u ba than opened the first
postgraduate courses at the "Leik-khone" ( the dome) at prome road in
1972.i was the master of ceremony and explained the nature of all the
postgraduate degree and diploma courses including the DCH course.dr yi
yi hla was attending the DCH course and she was so sweet.i was still an
army major and was wearing the army gren uniform.dr ma hla kyi said i
lookd too young in the army uniform.she was my class mate at the
special premedical intermediate class at the university of rangoon in
1955 /1956.dr tin oo, the paediatrician, told me that she had been to
london and that she had a lot of experience in maternal child
health.she was his assistant and attending the DCH course as a
necessity.some body told me she was"Yuwaddy Khin Oo, the novelist" and a
contemporary of kyi aye.

i knew that she was married to u win swe, an officer (director)at the
ministry of information and they had two or three children that i'm not
sure of. but, one thing sure is that she invited the EC members of the
myanmar writers and journalists association and i had to go to innya
lake as a representative of the EC to attend her daughter's wedding.it
was crowded and i remember a lottery ticket was presented to every guet
who attended the wedding ceremony.she was by then very rich and she had
started writing health education articles mainly on child health for
lay people.

she is very generous and she used to invite all the EC
members of the writers and journalists association for lunch and dinner
frequesntly.she also donated money for the fund of the association.
she said she had written several dozens short stories and novels in
her younger days, but could not write them any more.but she still
continues writing health education articles in various magazines.i have
read one of her articles in the latest "kalyar magazine".she sometimes
wrote about her family life, her free prctice or clinic, her grand
children and pets.she is truly an admirable physician_writer.i wish
her a long and healthy life.
